When I switch from Mail or Calendar to Contacts I would like to be on the
last Contact I have viewed. I would also like to be able to immediately start
typing the first few letters of a name without having to highlight one on the
page. Is this possible?

You can't do the first thing but I just checked on your second request and
it seems that Outlook works that way already. At least it did here where I'm
using OL2003 and using the Detailed Address Card view of the Contacts folder
