an I have a list of clients with all the contact information set up in
outlook. I have their names and birthdays in an excel spreadsheet. Is there a
way to import the birthdays. We can assume that the contact name fields are
an exact match.

Outlook doesn't allow for the "updating" of specific fields when importing
contacts. You'd need to write your own code or use a 3rd party tool (such as
ours). You may also find other alternatives here:

Have you tried File | Import /export Wizard? That's what it's for.
