Can I replace an old contacts folder with a new updated version?

I am updating a contacts folder for somebody who has been working on another
copy, of the same folder, deleting duplicate entries.  Can the older version
be overwritten or does this process have to be done manually?  (about 5000
contacts, so it would be a long job!)

Overwritten or combined?  For the former, empty the old contact folder by
selecting all entries (select one, then press CTRL-A), then pressing Delete.
Open the new contact folder, select all the entries, then click Edit>Copy to
Folder and specify the old folder as the destination.
