Is it possible to send a request to my friends, colleagues and so forth via
email for their contact info/birthdates, etc and have that automatically
updated in Outlook? Does Outlook have a feature that can do this?

Automatically?  How?  Every one of their answers could be in a different
format.  How would any program deal with that automatically?

Actually, I found a Shareware program (Outlook plugin) that does just that:
Actual Contacts for Outlook. Free 30 day trial, then $25. Seems pretty neat.
I wonder if there's  something free out there that does the same thing,
though.

There are a number of similar utilities, but other than plaxo and similar
online services, none are free that I know of.
