Outlook provide several methods to display a contact:
[company],[surname],[first name] etc, but when using using 'select names'  to
add a contact to an email recipient list, the contact view and sort order is
always [first name] [last name].  It would be really helpful if the select
names format and sort order matched the contact display options.

What's stopping you?  Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing
directories or address books>Next.  Select the Outlook Address Book
services, click Change, and set the sort order at the bottom or that
dialogue.

I'm using Outlook 2002 and I'm having the same problem.  I just tried what
you suggested and it hasn't changed the order the names appear when I'm
adding them to an e-mail recipient list.
