I'm trying to set up a distribution list. When I select the contact names
from the window on the left, either a "." or a ";" shows in the window on the
right. this is happening for all my contacts. If I go ahead and do this, &
hit ok, there are no names or addresses of any kind in the distribution
address list window.

The same scenerio is true even if I'm just adding names to either the adress
or CC fields of an email message. Can anyone help?

I would guess you imported these Contacts and did so incorrectly.
Your error is well described:
