Im using outlook 2002 and have all my contacts lists LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME.
However, when I create a new mail message the type ahead only recognizes the
FIRSTNAME. For example: Assume I have 3 names.
JONES, MARY
JONES, MABELLE
JONES, MARK

In the TO line I begin to type MA and it lists all three of the JONES names
to choose from. But when I type JO I get nothing. I want to have it display
names by LASTNAME as I type them. I checked in the Contact Options and played
with these settings but could not get it to work. Coincedentally, this works
by default in Outlook Express. Any help would be appreciated.

Autocompletion does not use your Contacts. It uses a cache of names from
messages you have recently sent.
If you want to search your contacts use Autoresolution instead (Automatic
name checking).

Russ,
THanks for the quick response but this still is not working for me. Here is
an example for you to try to duplicate and see if you get the same problem.
Add three contacts:
JONES, MARY (mary@whatever.com)
JONES, MABELLE (mabelle@whatever.com)
JONES, MARK (mark@whatever.com)

Notice the first 2 characters of both the FIRST NAME and LAST NAME are
identical.
JO and MA

I want to create a new message for MARY JONES however I do not want to type
MA. I want to type JO and get a list of all the JONES.

Can this be done?

thanks for any help you can provide.

I already told you why that is happening. Autocompletion does not use your
Contacts data.
Take some time and read this primer:
