How many contacts you can have in a distribution list?

I have approx. 200 names in my distribution list, but when I try to send a
message, it says the list is too big.  What is the maximum amount you can
have per list?

It's the limit imposed by your mail server that matters. Ask your ISP or corporate mail administrator.
