Can I prevent multiple fileds from showing up in contacts merge?

After importing to microsoft outlook from a contact management program, we
are trying to prevent Outlook from duplicating (e-mail and fax are both being
populated when trying to send information to the contacts in the import
file).  Can this be circumvented?

Your post is unclear. What do you think Outlook is "duplicating" and where?
What does the import have to do with this? If you are talking about the
Outlook Address Book, then both fax and email addresses should appear.
Outlook would be behaving as designed since both fax and email are
electronic addresses. If that's what you're asking about, then read this:
