I am importing data with some custom fields, and i am able to create the
custom fields in the "current view" but not able to select them when mapping
the data from Excel to Outlook.

Outlook doesn't support importing to custom fields. You'd have to write custom code or use a third-party application. See http://www.outlookcode.com/d/customimport.htm.

I have not installed my "business contact manager" program. Would that do the
custom field/import issue?

This may be of interest regarding importing data into custom fields:

http://www.contactgenie.com/cg20features.htm

(FYI - CG Importer is an "import" only product and duplicates can result if
contacts pre-exist. CG DataPorter allows "updating" of pre-existing contacts
provided that you can uniquely identify a contact using one or more fields
(user specified) that are contained in both the contact folder and input
data file). CG products are not intended for BCM configurations.

Re: Business Contact Manager - has it's own import process but does not
enable importing to custom fields not belonging to BCM.
