When I need to look up an email address I have to go to contacts because my
address book is empty. All my email groups are gone. However, the contacts
file is OK (i.e. all addresses, phones, etc.), just can't access from the
email screen.

The Contacts Folder is your "address book." Outlook has no separate address
book. The Outlook Address Book is just a view of your Contacts. Perhaps you
have corrupted your Outlook Address Book and need to repair it. I trust you
know how. If not, you must post your Outlook version for someone to help
you.
