I have made a dreadful mistake sychronising my Outlook Contacts between my PC
and my Palmtop.  Before synchronising I deleted all the Contacts on my
Palmtop first.  I thought I could get a clean copy of my PC contacts on my
Palmtop, however it did quite the opposite - I ended up removing all the
Contacts on my PC.  I have not yet closed the session of Outlook on the PC
and have looked into the folder that contains the OUtlook.pst file which
looks like a sizeable file.  Is there anyway I can shut down this session
with Outlook without the current settings being saved?

No.
Restore from backup.
