when I change an email address in my contacts list, how do i update the
address book information?

There would be no need to. They are the same data source.
Is there some reason you think they are not? If so, explain why and include
your Outlook version.

when i change the email address in contacts then go to a new mail message and
use the address book, the address book still shows the old email address. I
am using Outlook 2002

Really.
There would be no explanation for that behavior.
Explain how you are using the address book. Verify you are not using
autocompletion. Verify that the Contacts folder in which you are changing
the address is the same one you are displaying in the address book.
