Address Book vs. Contacts?

Hi,

Can someone explain to me the difference between the Address Book and
Contacts in Outlook?

I have a user who uses a laptop with a docking station in the office. He is
running Office 2000 and we have an Exchange server on the backend. We also
have Citrix setup and what this user does is uses his home computer to
access Citrix to work from home and only uses the laptop when traveling.
When he looks at his Address Book on Citrix he sees a different list than
when he looks at his Address Book on the laptop. To make it more confusing
for me, when he looks at Contacts in Outlook on the laptop he sees a
different list than when he looks at the Address Book.

On the laptop I selected the contacts folder and did a 'synchronize this
folder' but that didn't seem to help. Basically he's noticing that when he
deletes a contact in the Address Book it isn't deleted anywhere else. Is
there some procedure he can use to sync the Contacts on his laptop, which I
think is an off-line folder, with his Address Book and then sync that with
Exchange?

A Contacts folder is a folder configured to hold Contact items. The address
book is a view showing contact names and electronic addresses into all
folders containing Contact items that have been enabled as address books

Perhaps he has a different Contacts folder enabled as an address book on the
laptop. Also, the address book shows only those contacts with electronic
addresses (e-mail and FAX). ANy contact lacking both does not show in the
address book.

You shouldn't manipulate the items you see in the address book. Manipulate
them from within the COntacts folder where they reside.

Syncing Outlook with the Exchange mailbox should keep the contacts folder
(and hence the address book) up to date.

Thanks for the response Brian, that was the definition I was looking for. I
also found a great little tutorial on the MS website about becoming an
Address Book Expert. Very nicely done I thought.

Turns out that he had an offline mail box on the laptop and the contact
folder for the offline mail box was set to display in the address book, the
main contacts folder was not. Since the offline contacts was the one he
wanted I deleted all the contacts from the Exchange contacts list and moved
all the contacts over from the offline mail box. I then switched the
property to show the contacts in the address book and he's all fixed up.

All in all it was a nice little excersize and I learned alot about how the
contacts and address books work.
