select names

Outlook 2002, Windows XP user.  I cannot select names to create distribution
lists  or send new emails.  All I get is either a (.) or a (;) in the to:
line. I have already verified that the Contacts folder is enabled as email
folder (box is checked)
Please provide any other suggestions.

Sounds to me like you imported your Contacts and did so incorrectly:
