I am trying to udate existing contacts by importing information from another
program.  The problem I am experiencing is it either overwrites all data or
duplicates contact.  Is there any way to import new data and keep the old
info?

Depends entirely on the method you use to import and the data source, none
of which you stated.
Explain in detail what you are doing and what happens.
