I did something that now when I attempt to sort my contacts by categories I
get "You cannot sort this field" box. This only happens when I use the mouse
to click the top of the column. It will sort when I go to view , arrange by.
I tried reinstalling office 2003 but this did not solve the problem.

It's not a problem, but by design. Since Categories is a field that can hold more than one value, sorting by it wouldn't make a lot of sense in many scenarios. What you do instead is group on that field, which will show all the items marked with each category in its own group.

Outlook is telling you the truth. Category sort is meaningless and
impossible, since any contact may be listed
under multiple categories.
You can group by Category, not sort.

Outlook has NEVER enables sorting By Category. You haven't "done" anything.
Outlook will Group By Category.
Use the Group By Box and drag Category into it - now it will be grouped by
Category. Or use the By Category view.
BTW turn on the Advanced toolbars and save yourself a lot of clicks when
changing views and manipulating the tables views.

Thanks Judy that has helped. Might have more questions later. Kevin
