I created a new folder called "export contacts" to export my contacts to
another program.  After doing so, I removed this folder from the "my
contacts" list at the left side of the window.  However, when I try to find a
contact using the "find a contact" feature on the task bar, I have to choose
between "contacts" and "export contacts" before receiving the contact entry.
How can I delete the "export contacts" folder?

In the full folder tree you should be able to right click on the folder and
delete it then empty the Deleted Items folder to rid yourself of the folder
'forever'
