I recently installed Office 2003 and a local telephone numer now has (1) as a
prefix, instead of the area code, eg. (1) 866-1234 instead of (919) 866-1234.
It is a problem because I sync Outlook with my Treo 650 and the phone number
appears in the Treo as 1866-1234. I cannot make a phone call from the contact
and the phone does not recognize the contact in an incoming call.
How can I change the default Outlook Contact information to show the area
code instead of (1) for telephone numbers ?

Outlook does this by default when you have set your default dialing location
correctly for your operating system. You can easily turn off the option to
automatically add the country code to local numbers in Outlook's Dialing
Properties (Contacts > Action > Call Contact... > New Call).
