On January 9, 2006 I tried to sync my PDA with Oulook 2003.  Since them I
have received a message in a greyout folder side that I am ..."Unable to
display folder."
I have run the repair from Office 2003, I have tried to run the inbox
repair.  I have even tried to import the contact pst which I exported prior
to syncing the PDA and the Windows XP Pro SP-2.  I have even gone so far as
to try re-installing the Office 2003.  All to no avail.  Does anyone have any
other suggestions?
(I can still find the OAB in my address book file, I just can not access it
through Contacts).

Could you please provide a clear description of the actual problem you are
having?
The steps that produce the error and the actual error message would be a
good place to start.
Most problems created by synchronization are not Outlook problems and should
be addressed by the manufacturer of the synchronization software.

The problem is that I can not access the contacts folder in any view.  The
sync program that is being used is Microsoft Activesync 4.1.1

The message is: "unable to display folder."

Under the File tab, the only choices are:
Print
work offline (greyed out)
Exit

I am not sure what other information that I can provide; howevwer, if you'll
tell me, I will try and provide it.

Thank you for your interest Russ.

Never seen it.
Try the ActivSync group if you're certain the synch did this.
Do you back up your data?

I exported the data to another file conmtactsbackup010906.pst.  I have tried
importing the file but that function is not available with the contacts
folder being unable to be displayed.

I wish I was poistive that Activesync caused this but I am not 100% certain
(nor even 50% sure).

Have you checked your Address book settings?  Click on the address book icon
on the standard toolbar of Outlook and then click on tools within this box.
Go to options and verify accordingly.  The reason I am recommending this is
it is possible that your synch somehow created another address book that is
there but not being displayed.

You should never use import and export to backup data. It loses data.
Did you receive any messages at all when you ran the Inbox Repair Tool?
Try starting Outlook once with the /resetfolders command line switch. This
switch (and a few other really helpful ones) are discussed here:

Russ and Tim, thank you for your assistance.  I finally got a way to correct
the message, “Unable to display folder.”  And the message displayed when
syncing the PDA which was, "Unable to open the  folder.  To correct, shut
down Outlook then re-start.  After restarting disconnect the device then
reconnect.  If this does not correct he problem then re-install Outlook.  If
that does not correct the issue then contact Outlook."

Thanks to your support.  Here is what I did to correct the problem:

1.    Reinstalled Outlook from the installation CD.
2.    Reinstalled Outlook Updates.
3.    Ran the Inbox repair tool “scanpst.exe” from the folder drive:\Program
Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\LocaleID folder - where LocaleID is the
locale identifier (LCID) for the installation of Microsoft Office. The LCID
for English - United States is 1033. [I did this because I found that the
first few times it ran, I did not see a progress bar or any results therefore
it must not have run correctly.]
4.    Ran the “repair” function from the scanpst.
5.    Restored the missing information from my back-up (in this case it was my
PDA.)

I do not know if this protocol will work for everyone, but in my case it
did.  Once again, Russ if you had not suggested that I transmit the exact
error messages, I would not have thought to try the protocol again.

Thank You,

Bob Brown
