when I open Contacts the first name listed in contacts is not highlighted.
The cursor in all other application defaults to the first line of data but
not in contacts. Is there a setting i missed setting? if so where do i find
the setting?

There is no such setting. I believe this is caused by using Outlook Today
as your startup folder.
