in-place upgrade from Outlook Express to Outlook2003

Hi,

Assume I have the following: Windows XP with Outlook Express, with PAB and
Contacts.
If I then install Outlook 2003 onto the same computer, it prompts me to
import everything from Outlook Express, and according to numerous
documentation, it should also import the PAB and Contacts. (I have tested
this 3 times, and it worked).

as per quote:
"The Personal Address Book was available in previous versions of Outlook. If
you upgrade to Outlook 2003 from a previous version and have an existing
Personal Address Book, Outlook will prompt to import the entries in the
Personal Address Book to the Contacts folder and then remove the Personal
Address Book."

What if the PAB is not migrated? I have found this article pertaining to
Outlook 2002: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=284353

Could one assume the above article to also apply to Outlook 2003 ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You are mistaken. Outlook Express has never even used a PAB.
Only your Contacts from OE will be imported during an installation of
Outlook, which is not an upgrade to OE, BTW.

1.) so what you are saying is that Outlook Express does not use the PAB -
only Contacts?

2.) During the installation of Outlook2003 on a pc with OExpress it simply
copies amongst other things, the Contacts database?

3.) So where does the PAB fit then? confused am I?

After some research I have found the following:

Outlook Express (as u said) never used the PAB
Versions of Outlook, prior to 2003 used the PAB.

Am I correct thus far?

So if I have a WinXP & Outlook 2000 computer (with a PAB), and I install
Outlook 2003 (upgrade) that PAB should be migrated to Contacts - if not then
there is the manual procedure of:

1. On the File menu in Outlook 2003, click Import and Export.
2. Click Import Internet Mail and Addresses, and then click Next.
3. Click Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, and then click Next.
4. Choose how you wish to handle entries that would duplicate any current
Outlook contacts, and then click Finish.

Am I on the right track now?

Correct. It uses the Windows Address Book (WAB).

In reality, the PAB has been deprecated since Outlook 2000 at least. I
don't recall needing it in Outlook 97, either.

Migrate it to Contacts before upgrading 2000 to 2003.

That will migrate your WAB contacts from Outlook Express to the Contacts
folder in Outlook. You can migrate your rules during that same process as
well, but don't migrate your mail that way because the received date will
change to match the date of import. Instead, export mail from Outlook
Express.
