Outlook 2003 crashes when using reading pane in Contacts

I like to keep a reading pane open in Contacts for quick access to
information.  On my new computer, whenever I search for a contact, either by
typing the first few letters or by navigating via the alphabetical listing on
the right side, I get an error message saying that Outlook must close.  I do
not experience the problem when the reading pane is closed, and I never
experienced the problem on my old computer, which was configured identically.
The Advanced System Information error log states the following:

"Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.8010.0, stamp 43d16d53,
faulting module msmapi32.dll, version 11.0.8002.0, stamp 4373069d,
debug? 0, fault address 0x000141d3."

I have tried "detect and repair" without success.  I am reluctant to
reinstall with default settings because I have so thoroughly customized
Outlook.  Do you have any other suggested fixes that I might try out?  Thanks.

I am running Outlook 2003 SP2, as part of Office Professional Edition 2003,
on a Windows XP Professional platform.

Assuming most recent updates (officeupdate.microsoft.com), I would try two
things...
a) recreating profile
b) seeing if the problem persists in safemode (start-->run,  outlook.exe
/safe)

Perhaps someone else has more.
