outlook mail merge, office assistant

The mail merge feature of outlook will not merge. I keep getting the error:
office assistant not installed. I have tried several times running setup in
maintenance mode and installing the office assistant. Office assistant works
fine until I attempt a mail merge. Help?

The information necessary for an answer would include: Outlook version, Word
version, configuration of your mail service, configuration of your address
book service, and precise steps that produce the error.
