information that would permit anyone to hazard a guess as to what happened

In anut shell, I noticed that at least ten contacts are missing from my
contacts list in Outlook. I did not delete them, they just no longer exist.
Is it possible they were archived due to lack of accessing them?

No. Contacts are never archived.
They also do not disappear randomly and for no reason without some action by
the user.
You mentioned a Treo. I suspect there is a lot more to this story you are
leaving out.
