I noticed that I had a group in my contacts list called Computers. I also had
a contact list or address book under My Contacts called Computer. These were
not the same list. Did I simply confuse a contact list with a distribution
list?

Hard to know. The term "contact list" could mean anything.
Describe what you mean more accurately.

In the left pane there is a heading called My Contacts when you are in the
contacts database. I have several sets of Contacts including Computer.
Under Contacts (default) I have a group defined by the term Computers which
is bolded.
Until now I thought these were the same lists, but they are not identical.
It appears I had updated one or the other over time thinking I was on the
same list.

You haven't helped much. You must not realize that there are many versions
of Outlook and many views in each version.
We can't read minds.
My best guess is that you are using Outlook 2003 in the Contact Folder view.
If you want to know exactly what Contact Folders your profile contains, use
Folder List view to examine your entire folder hierarchy. At some point you
may have dragged and dropped one Contacts Folder into another.
