Which brings up a questioin - why are we all of a sudden seeing phone
numbers written with periods instead of dashes? I've seen that in lots of
ads, correspondence, etc., and can't see the point. What was wrong with the
'old-fashioned' dashes?

It's trendy. I picked up the habit while living in Europe. Maybe the period
distracts the eye less than the dash.
