When I export and import a dist list and also the whole contact list from
which the dist list was created from, I can't double click on the contact
person in the distribution list to view there individual details it tells me
the contact can't be found but it is in the main contact list, is there
something I can do to fix it because it works in the original outlook account
it was exported from.

Even a casual perusal of the posts in this group would have answered your
question.
DL's never survive export and import. They barely survive one day to the
next on their own.
The obvious question is why would you ever export or import Outlook data?
There is never any reason to do so, and you lose a lot more information than
just DL's.

Hi Russ
The person that worked here before me had the dist list on there e-mail
account and now I have my own e-mail account and need the same contact
details and dist list, we don't have a exchange server that would have made
life so much easier but for now Outlook should be more than capable of doing
the job.

Outlook is perfectly capable of doing so when you migrate data correctly,
which never includes importing and exporting.
Exchange Server has nothing to do with it.
Just copy your PST file and open it in the other installation if you want
your data to survive the transfer.

Hi Russ
The export and import works perfectly but the problem is that when I double
click on the contact person in the Dist list to make a change it tells me
that it can't find the contact do you want to remove it, but the contact is
in my main contact list. The option on the exchange server I was refering to
is when you have a global address list where all the contacts are saved and
everybody in the company can use them and one administrator can change it so
that when there is a change it is also changed in the dist list. Like I said
before if I create a Dist List and make a change on one of the contacts it
also changes it in my main contact list but when you export it and import it
in another account there is an error and it is not possible, so that is what
I am trying to get a solution for.

Already provided. Known issue.
Never import or export a DL. They never survive. The link to the underlying
Contact is broken.
Use a supported method to transfer a DL.

Easiest way is to insert the DL as an Outlook Item in a message in RTF
format.
Otherwise, you need to copy the entire folder in which the DL resides and
open it in another installation.
