I have a lengthy distribution list that needs to be divided in two.   Is
there a way to split the list without retyping all of the names again

Not really. The only way to do so would be to make copies of the DL to a
separate folder, modify them there, then copy them back to your default
folder. Any change you make to a DL in its default folder will be permanent
and cannot be undone.

Right-click the DL and move it just a little.  Release the mouse button and
choose Copy.  This will make a second identical DL.  Open it, give it a new
name, delete some of the names, save and close.  Open the original and
delete from it the names you did NOT delete from the new one.  Save and
close.  You'll now have two DLs whose contents together match the contents
of the original.

...not quite as safe as making your changes in a separate folder. I've seen
too many users make irreversible changes to their DL. DL's are not very
forgiving.
