I am trying to creat a new distribution list by deleting names from an
existing distribution list.  When I remove the names from the list and give
the new list a name, I then hit the save and close and it saves my new
distribution list, but it also replaces my old list with the new one.  I want
to keep both distirbution lists.

I think that essentially 'renames' the distribution list.

You might try opening the old distribution list.  Then select File-->Copy to
Folder
Select the same contacts folder and ok.

Then it should be in your contacts twice.  Now make changes and rename it.
