I cannot find a couple of names in a large DL.  It appears to be
"alphabetized" but the name is not in that letter area of DL.  Is there a
search function to find that name somwhere in the DL?  Or if I delete from
Outlook Contacts will that delete the name from DL as well?

DL's have no features, including searching and automatic updating. Do not be
fooled by that "Update Now" button. I have yet to meet anyone for whom it
works.
Most users I know try to avoid becoming overly dependent on DL's, especially
large ones. They are notoriously unreliable. Sooner or later they will go
belly up and you'll wish you had grouped your recipients differently.
