Is there a way to prevent creating a duplicate contact when I drag an e-mail
into my contacts folder to add them to my database?

If you are configured correctly, you will be prompted if an entry is a
duplicate. What happens if you use the R click > Add to Contacts method?

I guess I'm not configured correctly, because I did a test and dragged in a
dupe and I was not prompted! What should I do to configure correctly?

When I right click on the e-mail message, the window that appears does not
give me the option to 'add to contacts'?  Also the reason why I like to drag
is that I want to add the contact to my public folders and by dragging I can
just direct it to the appropriate address book, instead of it defaulting to
my personal address book.

You add addresses to Contacts, not messages. Open a message and r click an
address and see if you get prompted when you add a duplicate.

so I did that and didn't prompt me that a duplicate existed? also, that
automatically defaults to my personal contacts and does not allow me to
choose a public contact folder to add to?

Now you're adding more variables into the equation. The behavior you seek
will only apply to your default Contacts Folder and only when the Outlook
Address Book Service is correctly configured for that folder.

Thank you, so even if I was configured correctly it would only work for my
personal contacts not the public, so it can't work for what I need! oh well.

That is my understanding, but you are actually not asking an Outlook
question when you ask about Public Folders. Those are in the Exchange
domain.

Oh, I'm a bit confused with that? so for future, I shouldn't ask any Public
Folder Questions in this forum? where would I ask those questions?

You can ask them here since many Outlook users connect to Exchange and can
figure them out. I, however, am not one of them.

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.exchange.admin or

to me.
