'select a name category' is the pop-up screen dialogue box that Outlook
displays when you use the icon "to" in creating an email, a list from which
you can select who you want to choose. The list shows up on the pop-up
scroll-down, but does not appear in Contacts navigation on the far left of
the screen.

This is what is happening to me, so I exported to fix the file and then
imported now my e mail addresses in the file are missing. Same message as
above. This has been happening, and I did a repair for OUtlook, as no matter
what I try, the Address book/Contacts are not working.

And what do you think you are seeing there? You are seeing the names of your
Contact Folders. Remove the one that throws the error. It is an outdated or
corrupt reference.
You do so here: Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing
directories or address books > Outlook Address Book > Change.
