I'll check that. Sorry about omitting the version - Outlook 2003.

Outlook Address Book service is installed and working, so I tried to document
more precisely what is happening.
** "REPLY TO" Problem **
Case 1: If the incoming email show the "from" field as <name>@<domain>, then
"reply to" works because <name>@<domain> is put into the "to" field of the
reply message.
Case 2: If the incoming email shows the "from" field as a person's name
(like "Steve Smith") AND that person is already in my contact list, then
"reply to" works.
Case 3: However, if the incoming email shows the "from" field as a person's
name (like "Steve Smith") and that person is NOT already in my contact list
then "reply to" does not work because "Steve Smith" goes into the "to" field
and is not resolved into an email address. (The "check names" box pops up
when I hit send).
What's interesting about this case is that in the reply message area the
system includes the original email text plus the header at the top:
From: Steve Smith [mailto:stevesmith@<domain>]
So, it "knows" the sender's address. It just doesn't use it.
*** ADDING SENDER TO CONTACTS problem ***
Sometimes, the right click on the "from" name shows the correct context
choices and sometimes it does not. I can't figure out what the common
denominator is. For example, notifyMS@microsoft.com shows it fine.
MWedua@aol.com does not. Email from some people already on my contacts list
works, email from others does not.
*** Creating new email problem ***
This seems to be related to the first two problems. Sometimes, when I type a
name from my contact list in the "to" field, it doesn't "resolve" into a
valid email address unless I hit <ctrl K> and then pick it from the list.
Then, the next time it will work fine.
Shouldn't these resolve automatically?
Thanks

Can't reproduce your problem You seem to be mistaking autocompletion for
autoresolution. Read about the difference:

Good article. That helps me understand. Once I have sent an email to a
person, Outlook will "autocomplete" thereafter.
Wish I knew what to do about the other issues ... It just seems odd that
hitting "reply to" doesn't work in some cases.
Thanks for your help.

It does seem odd. I've never seen it reported. In what format are these
messages to which you can't reply received and what does their email header
look like? To what type of information store are you trying to add these
addresses?

I finally realized what the common link is ... these are "old messages" that
I transferred over from outlook express (exported from OE into PST file) that
I had not yet replied to. Actually, ALL of my old messages exhibit this same
behavior. Anything I've received since converting to Outlook (last Friday)
works as it should (including the "adding contacts" feature). I read
somewhere in another of your posts that converting/importing/etc was a little
tricky!
While I have your attention, I have another question about the CTRL-K
feature - is there a way to do all of the addresses at once instead of
waiting for each time I write an email?
Thanks for your help.

Aha. Yes, that would explain it. It's always the missing bits of information
that bite you.
I don't understand your question about CTRL-K. That's autoresolution
(Automatic Name Checking) which is only done when a message is being sent.
If you are asking how to check the validity of an email address, Outlook
does that automatically whenever you first create the Contact Record, so
there would be no need to do that for your existing Contacts. --
