My contacts will not sort by the categories I've assigned

My contacts are set up and I added categories to each contact so I'd be able
to sort by category.  When I go to View, and sort by category there aren't
any.  But, if I look beside the category button, they are all listed there.
Any suggestions to what might be happening.

Post your Outlook version, how you added categories, how you assigned each
Contact to a category, and how you selected the By Category view.

Outlook 2003, Added catagories to contacts by clicking on the individual
contact then clicking on the catagories button at the bottom of the of page
then I added all of the relivent catagories to the each contact and I used
the master catagories but also added some of my own catagories to the master,
and have tried various ways to view by category (view, current view, by
category and if I try to sort by clicking on the category field at the top of
the categories view and pops up that it cannot sort this field)  The field
shows that I've added catagories to each contact, you can actually see that
it's been done it just won't sort but it does sort by all other fields.

You're losing me. So does your "By Category" view show your Categories or
not?

I am also trying to sort by categoryy- outlook 2003- same problems.  When I
view by category it shows all the categories but the sort is really still
alpha by contact name.   I have tried to find the "group by" button but am
unable to find it on any toolbar.

Judy Gleeson has provided the following workaround to overcome the new way
Outlook 2003 sorts the "By Category" view:

Use the Detailed or Simple List view, show the columns you want to see
(field chooser), click the column (eg Last Name) you want to sort by, THEN
use the group by box to group by Category.  That should have alphabetical as
well as the grouping.
