Saving the Categories in Contacts when Exporting to Excel

I am attempting to export a large contact file (1500 contacts) into Excel,
for importing into a new database.  Although I have exported the file, all of
the category information appears to have been lost.  Is there any way around
this?

You haven't explained what you did (step by step) to give us anyway of
knowing what you did incorrectly.
