Over time I have built up thousands of Contacts.  I now want to archive and
delete all Contacts that I haven't sent email to or received email from in
say the last 12 months.  How do I do this?

Contacts cannot be archived by design.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact.  All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, Chris McCubbin asked:

Well, you could set autoarchive on the Contacts folder, but since Outlook maintains no record of how often a particular contact is used, it would be pretty pointless and risk losing a lot of contacts to the archive.

Ah ????

There is no Archive option in Contact properties.

There's no easy way to Archive Contacts, but you can Copy Contacts to your
Archive folder.  Note that each time you do this, before coping, delete the
old Archive Contacts folder first.

As far as deleting individual contacts, it's either one-at-a-time or you can
use the Alpha-Tabs on the right side to help with this.

I also highly suggest you Categorize every contact even create your own
categories if necessary.
