what is the number next to the contact folders in Outlook?

There is a number in ( ) next to some of my contact folders. What is it?

Number of unopened items in that folder.

Select all items, right click and mark as read.

I thought the number of unread items was enclosed in brackets, not
parentheses.

OK.  I see.  Total number of items is enclosed in brackets.  Number of
unread items is in parentheses.
