sjw8585 - 16 Aug 2006 00:02 GMT I want to see the email address of the person to whom I'm addressing email instead of the name of the addressee. When I select from contacts folder it only show name. Is there a preference that will show address instead of name?
Thanks, sjw8585

The Address Book will show the address when you choose the name to add to the recipient field. WIthin the recipient field, however, the Display Name will show when you resolve the address. Modify your Display Name fields to show the address if you wish.

sjw8585 - 16 Aug 2006 18:19 GMT Thanks Brian, Where and how do I modify the Display Name field to show the address? Can I set that as a default?

Can I set that as a default? Open the Contact record and set the DIsplay Name. It's the "Display as" field right below the mail address field.

sjw8585 - 16 Aug 2006 22:09 GMT Hi Again, Brian.
I appreciate the help. I am not seeing a "display as" button right below the email address or the regular mail address. Could that be that I'm running Outlook 2000? Where else might I look?
Thanks,

OK, then, double-click the email address. That should open another window that contains a "Display as" equivalent.

sjw8585 - 17 Aug 2006 16:36 GMT Hi Brian,
Still trying. When I click on the name that is all I see in the email address area, I get an error message that reads, "Cannot perform the requested operation. The command requested is not valid for this recipient." That happens for each contact where the name appears instead of an email address. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

sjw8585 - 18 Aug 2006 16:29 GMT Yes, the person is a contact, and yes, I opened the contact record. There are 2 addresses, both snail and email. I assume you are saying to double click on the email address, but I have double clicked on them both. The email address is the one that gives the error message.

I'm sorry, but I don't know how to address the problem. I've never seen it and when I double-click the email address, I see a display field.

sjw8585 - 18 Aug 2006 20:39 GMT Well, thanks anyway. Can you suggest anybody else who might be able to help? Thanks

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] - 21 Aug 2006 22:55 GMT You've not posted enough information for anyone to help. Post your mail support mode of Outlook 2000. If you don't know, then tell us what line 2 of Outlook > Help | About says.

[quoted text clipped - 8 lines] >> it >> and when I double-click the email address, I see a display field. sjw8585 - 22 Aug 2006 02:08 GMT Hi Russ, It says Microsoft Outlook 2000 SR-1 (9.0.0.3821) Internet Mail Mail Only. Below that it says - Import/Export Converters Dataviz,Inc.
The problem is that when I address an email or try to add an address to an email either as a CC or BCC, I cannot see the email address of the intended recipient. I can only see the name of the intended recipient in the email address window.
There must be a setting or preference somewhere that will allow me to do this but I've tried everything that Brian suggested in the thread above, and none of it has worked.
Thanks for any help you can lend. Sjw8585

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] - 22 Aug 2006 02:49 GMT Thought so. IMO is not really Outlook. It is Outlook Express in disguise. It provides none of the usual Outlook features and was quickly abandoned both by Microsoft and by most users. You cannot do what you want and are long overdue for an upgrade to Outlook.

Wow, I've always been under the impression that I've been using Outlook. Everything says Outlook and in the programs dropdown menu, Outlook Express doesn't even appear. This problem only started when I upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. I installed the exact Microsoft Office 2000 Premium and the Windows Outlook from there.
Is there a solution?
Thanks, Sjw8585

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] - 22 Aug 2006 09:58 GMT You can easily switch to the full version of Outlook. IMO is a simplified version of Outlook that does not use extended MAPI and must use many of OE's transports (like for the address book service for exampl.) That's why you cannot access the display name). The display name is of so little consequence, you should look carefully before you switch to see if you really want to use the full version of Outlook: http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/choosingmode.htm
