After furious head scratching, mkilmarx asked:
| The addresses in "comtacts" do not sort by category. When i try to
| click the category field on top of the address themselves it informs
| me "you cannot sort by this field" What is happening? How can i send
| an email to a list of my categories? Can I easily make a category a
| distribution list?
Yes, that is what I tried, (I think). In the "Current View" menu I checked
the "Sort by Category" option (in the vertical, not drop down, menu) however
it does not sort. The categoris are listed but they are mixed up. THEN I
click on the horizontal bar menu aacross the top of the page (also containing
Full Name, Company, File as etc...) and I get a pop up informing me "You
cannot sort by this field"
sigh
Thanks

I suggest you turn on the Advanced Toolbar and use the Group By function,
rather than the Arrange by Function.
The By Category view puts the field Category in the Group By Box. You
cannot "sort" by category - only group.
One way to so send an email to a whole group, is to Group, then just grab
and drag the header of that group to the Outbox.
