When I put a phone number into a contact in Outlook as soon as I save it
Outlook underlines it and inserts a hyphen in the middle.  When I transfer
this to my mobile phone and use the number I get a message saying there is
something wrong with the number.  how can I stop Outlook doing this ?

You can't. How phone numbers are masked is hard coded. The manufacturers of
your mobile phone know that. If they expect to synch with Outlook, they must
write the correct software.
