When I want to send a message to someone, and click on the "to" field to
insert their name, outlook cannot find their name - yet their name shows up
in the contacts list. What am I doing wrong? Some names appear, but most
don't. Thanks.

Outlook version?  Outlook Address Book Service installed and configured?

You may have to remove and reinstall the Outlook Address Book service, especially if this was an upgrade from Outlook 2000 IMO.

Tools->Options->Mail Setup->Accounts->Directories->View or Change.  Select the Address Book service and click remove.  Back up one step and re-install it.  Close and restart Outlook.

Thanks Milly, I've tried this and unfortunately it did not help. I'll keep
trying to find an answer :-)
