I recently had to have my hard disk purged.  Outlook contacts were backed up
as a .dbx file (from Outlook express I think).  Can I paste these into the
new Contacts dbase on XP Home somehow?

You can't "paste" them into Outlook.  Outlook can't reference dbx files in
any way.  Moreover, Outlook Express does NOT store contacts in dbx files.
It uses the Windows address book (wab) for that.  If you have dbx files,
they do NOT contain contacts.

The first thing you must do is to configure Outlook Express to reference the
dbx files (ask how in an Outlook Express newsgroup like
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general or see
http://www.instideoutlookexpress.com/) then export the data from Outlook
Express to Outlook.  If you recover your WAB in OE, then you can use
File>Import and Export>Import Internet Mail and Addresses in Outlook to pull
them into your Contacts folder.
