Whenever I leve my contacts and go into mail and then return to contacts it
starts from the top again. I have over 1000 contacts and it is a pain to
always have to find it again especially when it is far down such as a   "W"
name.

Just press the letter W to jump there immediately.

That is fine but often times I jump back and forth to a particular contact
for information and I don't want to have to keep typing "W". I would like it
to just stay frozen.

it won't stay frozen.  You could open that Contact and then if you jump back
and firth you'll be fine.

Also try the Contact Lookup window.  If you have less than a few thousand
Contacts it is a quick way to get to them.

I am not able to keep the contact open and get back to my emails. I'm using
microsoft xp, I don't know if that makes a difference.
