how do I label a large group of contacts as private (category)?

Trying to manage categories but want to do in batches of contacts rather than
one at a time.

To set, replace or change categories in contacts you can use the tool
"EditContacts" (http://www.marchert.de/software.html#ec).

I went to this link - do not see how to download suggested program in
english, etc.

you have two things mixed together here.  Do you want to mark them Private
or place them in a Category?

Either way you can do it like this:

View the Contacts folder in Phone List view.
Turn on the Field Chooser (it's on the Advanced Toolbar).
Drag the column header (field name) you want to group by into the Group By
Box. eg Private or Categories.
Drag Contacts from the None group to the Private group.

I hope this helps you at least a little bit!

Grouping by category and dragging a selection of contacts to that category
will add that category to the items.
