You cannot open a PST file with a double click. Use the File > Open command
in Outlook.
Are you certain you created a PST file? I can't imagine a PST file ever
invoking Excel.

Okay, I tried open instead of double click, same result.
Brings up excel. I am not sure I did the save procedure
right but I went into import export in outlook and chose
export to a personal folder file. Followed the wizard and
burned the cd. Didn't receive any error messages and
when I initially created the file and looked at them, they
looked like pst files.
I went into find and typed *.*pst and it brings up the
contact file but under type it says other. Shouldn't it
say pst there? I'd be happy to just retype these contacts
into outlook again if I had them printed but I did not
print them out since I type personal note on each and use
the birthday, anniversary reminders as well. It's not
really proprietary info. Is there anywhere I can send the
file to have someone take a look at it? It's only 380k.
thanks,
Dave

Something went awry in the export. No PST file could ever open in Excel. Do
you have access to the original PST file? It is not necessary to export. You
can simply open the original PST file in Outlook to access its contents.
When you open the exported PST in Excel, what do you see?
If the exported file does indeed have a .pst extension, you can try
repairing it with the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe).

Russ,
The inbox repair did something since outlook does open the
file and post it in my folder list as "recovered personal
file" But, it has only on subfolder which is named
deleted files and it is empty. However, the file size is
368k. Each time I open it, it adds another recovered
personal file to the list. They are all empty and now I
have seven of them and can't delete them.
Is there a trick to seeing them? Is sending the file
someplace still an option?

There's nowhere I know of to send the file. The only repair options for PST
files are to alternate the Inbox Repair Tool with a scandisk utility until
no error messages are received.
This is one of the reasons I have never liked exporting PST files.

Russ,
Thanks. The repair tool said the errors were fixed and it
does now let me open the file. Any idea why the file is
empty but shows as 368k? Sorry for exporting the file.
I read the directions and thought that was the right way
to backup the files before I got rid of the computer.
Can you also help me now delete those additional folders.

Did you alternate the IRT with scandisk until no more errors were returned?
Delete what additional folders? If you cannot repair this PST file, you
should abandon it.
