Email address doesn't appear in Address Book

When entering the email address of a new contact (previously entered, but
accidentally deleted a few days earlier) on the Contact form General tab, as
I begin to type the address, it is entered automatically, but then disappears
after I tab down.  In the address book, only the symbol () appears.  This has
happened to several enteries that were once in my contacts, but accidentally
deleted when I was doing a detect and repair sometime back.  Any ideas?

BTW - I'm using Outlook 2003.

The addresses are being entered from your autocompletion cache. Try clicking
in the field before you Tab to see if you can get it to remain.

Thanks for replying so soon.  I've done that Russ.  It doesn't work.  I am at
a loss as to how to get these email addresses back in the contact field.  I
did discover that I can begin a new message and manually begin to type the
address (if I remember it) in the address box and it will come up there.  
Then I can complete my message and send.  But that doesn't help with the
Contact screen info.  Any other ideas?

After I click on the address and then attempt to move to another field it
disappears.  If I bring up the address book and try to enter it there I get a
message saying "An outlook address book entry cannot be used  as an email
address in a contact".

You must have corrupt entries in the autocompletion cache, then. I can
select any entry that exists in the autocompletion dropdown and populate any
electronic address field or copy it from there to another field.

So how do I deal with corrupt entries Russ?  Should I do a detect and repair?
Although I have been using Outlook since '97, I really haven't become a
"power user" and I appreciate your insights.

Not much you can do. The autocompletion cache was never intended to be a
backup for your data, nor was it meant to populate your Contact records. It
is only meant for addressing new messages. There is an outside chance that
your cache is fine and the connection to it from your Outlook profile is
what's corrupt. You could try creating a new Outlook profile from scratch
and migrating your NK2 file to the new profile as described here:
http://www.ingressor.com/autocompletetips.htm (about the fifth paragraph
down, only you are migrating to a new profile, not a new machine, so you
only have to rename your NK2 file to match your new profile's name).

I had the exact same issue and finally discovered that I could go into
Advanced E-mail Options (tools, options, preferences, email, advanced
email options) and turn off the 'suggest names' and 'autocomplete'
selections, and then would be able to enter the address and save it
into the contact form.  Then, I simply went back into the advanced
email options and turned them both back on, and am good to go. Hope
that helps.
