Filled contacts, but empty Address Book in Outlook 2007

I am running Outlook 2007/Vista. After having transferred from Outlook2003/xp
the address book seems to be empty.
If I look in “Contacts” all the entries are there. If I key anything in the
To field Outlook comes up with correct suggestions.  If I Click the To button
the list is empty and the Address Book dropdown is empty.
In Folder List -> Contacts -> Outlook Address Book  “Show this folder as an
email Address Book” is grayed out and not selected.

In Account  Settings -> Address Books I have an Outlook Address Book (Type
MAPI)

Remove the Outlook Address Book service, stop and restart Outlook, ad the
service back in, then stop and restart Outlook.

Hi Jan,

this site is for Outlook 2002 and 2003 but in 2007 the settings are the
same:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287563&Product=ol2002

Click to select View or change existing directories or address books, and
then click Next.

If your Outlook Address Book is listed delete it first, then restart Outlook
and add it again.

>There is one entry, but I cannot remove it

Every user of Outlook has the right to delete his "Outlook Addressbook".

In 2007 I have a tab called Address Books, and in there I have an "Outlook
Adress Book"

> Every user of Outlook has the right to delete his "Outlook Addressbook".
I have the Address Book, but the "Remove" is dimmed.

My pst file is of type "Personal Folders File (97-2002)" can that have
anything to do with my problem.

Thanks Jan

I have exactly the same problem and the fix that Oliver suggested does not
work. (see the thread

While I am glad to hear that I am not alone, I'm still searching for an
answer.

Is it possible that the I don't have the appropriate permission to
modify/delete the address book?  I used "Easy Transfer" to move the data from
my old system to the new one BUT my username on the new system is different
from the new one.

Hi JimmyMac,

As you said, it is always nice to known that I am not the only "stupid" one
around.
In my case i am an administrator user on Vista and i think i did the same.
On my old xp system I transferred the user to the Vista system. I think that
it somehow corrupted the data. I am thinking of creating an extra PST file.
Remove my current PST file. If that is a succes, add my current file again,
move everything to the new file (and then remove the old file).

Let me know if you get any success.

See the other thread. The only way to transfer Outlook data successfully has
always been and remains: copy the Outlook data file and open it in your new
Outlook profile. Then either copy what you want from it or set it to be the
default file for your new profile.

I am having this same problem using Outlook 2007 and Vista.

Re: Every user of Outlook has the right to delete his "Outlook

This doesn't seem to be possible for me. The "Remove" button is grayed
out so I can't remove it. I also cannot select any of the contacts
lists as Outlook Address Books.

I have otherwise followed the advice on this thread, but I am not able
to remove/add back the address book.

I've tried running Outlook in safe mode and I've tried running as
administrator, but neither works.
Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] - 08 Feb 2007 11:21 GMT
Correct. This has been changed in Outlook 2007. You can no longer remove the
Outlook Address Book Service to repair it. What problem are you having with
your address book and what are the steps to repro the problem? Did you try a
new profile?

Hi Russ, (Hi Jan, and sorry for the delay)

I checked this too, with the Addressbook. I installed the 60 days test
version of Office 2007.

It is not a bug in Outlook 2007?

I have to create a complete new Outlook profile to delete the old listed
contact folders that I used as Outlook Addressbook?

Do you know any reason why MS change this in 2007? I hope it is only a bug
and MS will change it with the first SP for Office 2007.

I am assuming it is a bug since Microsoft's own documentation
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA101642081033.aspx?pid=CH100776971033)
clearly lists removing the Outlook Address Book as one way to reset it.
I also don't know whether this is reproducible in all environments. I polled
the OL MVP's and have found none who are able to remove the Outlook Address
Book in Outlook 2007.

I've been working with Miocrosoft support to solve this - apparently there
are a bunch of people with this problem and it's somehow related to Easy
Transfer.  They weren't able to help, but I experimented and GOOD NEWS- I
fixed the problem.

Heres what i did.
1. Before doing anything, first make a backup copy of your .pst file (mine
was called outlook.pst)

2. I created a new Outlook profile (see instructions below).  The new
profile automatically generated a new .pst file - in my case it was called
outlook1.pst.

3. I started Outlook with the new profile and changed the data file to the
original outlook.pst.
From the main menu select Tools/Account Settings.
Select the Data Files tab.
Click the Add button.
Select Office Outlook Personal Folder (.pst) and click OK.
Find your original outlook .pst file and select it and click OK.
Back on the Account settings screen, highlight the original outlook pst file
and click "Set as Default"
Highlight the other outlook folder and click Remove

4. All I needed to do at this point was re-create my other email accounts (I
have 6 email addresses in outlook)

I hope that works for you too.
-Jim

Creating a new Outlook profile:
1. Click the Start Button, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Switch to Classic View, and then double-click Mail.
3. In the Mail Setup dialog box, click Show Profiles.
4. On the General tab, click Prompt for a profile to be used, and then click
Add.
5. In the Profile Name box, type a descriptive name for the new e-mail
profile, and then click OK.
6. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, click Add a new e-mail account, and
then click Next.
7. Click the appropriate server type for your new e-mail account, and then
click Next.
8. Type your account information in the required boxes, and then click Next.
9. Click Finish, and then click OK.

Indeed. The very solution I had suggested in the first place. Good for you.

JimmyMac,

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOU POSTING!!!!!
I have been on the phone from 9 am to 4 pm trying to get support on this
problem...i had a horrible day because of it....after searching and searching
on the web, I found your suggestion at 3 am and tried it. Bless you so much!
I was feeling so frustrated and angry with different support  after hours and
hours of explanation about what my problem was with the address book and
contacts  folder and I initially had used easy transfer for file
migration....with no results to show for my long day...I was sooooooooo
distrought over this problem....
What frustrated me most was that they wanted me to shell out money to fix
the problem that is essentially something that needs to be fixed on a
different level ....I was so so so emotionally beaten and frustrated because
I had spent my alotted budget for my new laptop and software....
You made everything so much better for me...YOU have no idea how much relief
you have given me with your solution- I literally mean it. I am sure MANY
MANY people may experience the same if something is not done at a higher
level.  THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU THANK YOU JimmyMac!!!
BLESS YOU so much,
Sylvia Crow

I have tried getting in contact wil MS to raise this bug and get an ETA for
fix but all their support options (e-mail,phone,live assistance) seem to be
chargeable - am i missing something? Recreating profiles/accounts is time
consuming and takes a lot of value out of the whole Easy-Transfer tool
concept. If it was any other product I would complain to the manufacturer
but, unless i'm missing something, Microsoft seem to have stonewalled
themselves behind a web of chargeable support services!

the first 90 days of support are free...
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&x=11&y=17&prid=10183&gpri
d=416357

(if the link doesn't work, use
http://support.microsoft.com/select/default.aspx and step through the links
for office 2007)

Easy Transfer screws up a lot of things (not just in outlook). It ends up
taking longer than if you just started from scratch.
