Outlook 2003 with Exchange, SBS 2003 and Office 2000.

When I link a contact sometimes Outlook uses the "File As" name (desired)
and sometimes it uses the "Full Name" (NOT desired.) How can I make Outlook
use the "File As" name always? If a client is showing the full name and not
the file as name, how can I change it to the file as name?

Clarify your post.
1. Outlook 2003 with Office 2000? I sure hope not.
2. Outlook "uses" the "File As" and "Full Name" fields where and how? We
have no idea to which view you might be referring.

In the bottom left corner of an Outlook contact is a field and a button
called "Contacts." You can use this to link to other contacts. Click on the
link and you bring up the other contact.

This field shows either the "full name" or the "file as" name of the linked
contact. My problem is that there appears to be no way to predict or change
which it will be, the file as name or the full name.

We have one folder listing all of our clients and contacts by name, with
hopefully no duplicates. This is the folder I want everyone to use. So
client "John Smith" is in this folder with his 'file as' name as "Smith,
John." In the notes I have listed all the different cases we may have for
John Smith.

There is another folder which is synchronized with our billing app and has
all of our client cases. These have "File As" names such as "Smith Will",
"Smith Divorce," "Smith Civil Suit" and so on. These names identify
particular cases involving John Smith. I want to link contact "John Smith"
in the main folder to the client cases involving him, but when I do this I
get erratic results, such as "Smith Divorce," "John Smith," "Smith Civil
Suit."  It should say "Smith Will" and  not "John Smith." How do I make it
say "Smith Will" as it should?

I hope this is clear.

I replied to Russ but it did not go through. To repeat:

In the bottom left corner of an Outlook contact is a field and a button
called "Contacts." This is right next to the "Category" button. You can use
this to link to other contacts. Click on the
link and you bring up the other contact. The other contact will also be
automatically linked to the first contact.

This field shows either the "full name" or the "file as" name of the linked
contact. My problem is that there appears to be no way to predict or change
which it will be, the file as name or the full name. I need it show the File
As name because this is what I use to identify contacts.

We have one folder listing all of our clients and contacts by name, with
hopefully no duplicates. This is the folder I want everyone to use. So
client "John Smith" is in this folder with his 'file as' name as "Smith,

I hope this is clear. Thanks in advance for your help.
