I look at my contacts in Memo Style View and at the top of each contact is
the word "unknown".  Its not a header and I can't find the field it belongs
to.  WHat can I do to fix it?

it's usually the display name - try resetting the view and if it's still
showing it try changing the display name on one contact to see if it
corrects it.
